Reflective Approaches

Reflective approaches in music research recognise that knowledge emerges through practice as much as through analysis. When songwriting is used as a research method, the creative process itself becomes a site of reflection: choices around lyrics, structure, sound, and collaboration reveal how experiences, identities, and emotions are being interpreted and transformed. By documenting these reflections alongside the songs, through journals, annotations, or commentaries, researchers make their decision-making transparent and show how creative practice generates insight that traditional methods may not capture.
