USING MUSIC AS RESEARCH

it is becoming increasingly recognised that creating and reflecting on music can be a way of generating knowledge. Instead of only writing about music, you use music and the music process itself as the methodology. This can take different forms: songwriting as method (exploring ideas or experiences through original songs), practice research (using performance, composition or production to investigate questions), and reflective approaches (analysing your own creative process to understand decisions, challenges and outcomes). Together, these approaches show how music can produce valuable insights about our own experiences and of those around us.
